CSEP Webinar: Bridging exercise science and rehabilitation science for stroke recovery
Limited mobility after stroke can contribute to physical inactivity and sedentary behaviours, which can compromise recovery and contribute to higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Exercise and physical activity can help improve many cardiovascular risk factors and may be an effective strategy for primary and secondary prevention. This webinar will explore new research in stroke and exercise that bridges exercise science and rehabilitation science to advance stroke recovery. We will discuss clinical considerations for prescription, effects of training intensity to optimize outcomes, approaches to promote physical activity, and knowledge translation to promote best practices in care after stroke.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Ada Tang, PT, PhD, McMaster University
Dr. Ada Tang (she/her) is a physical therapist, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Rehabilitation Science) at McMaster University. Dr. Tang has extensive clinical experience in neurological rehabilitation, which she carries into her research program with the MacStroke Canada research team where they focus on the role of exercise and physical activity on cardiovascular health, fitness, function and recovery after stroke. Dr. Tang and her team incorporates important considerations of sex, gender, and other variables related to recovery after stroke, always with a focus on equity, diversity and inclusion, along with environmental sustainability. Dr Tang received a YWCA Woman of Distinction for her work in stroke rehabilitation and recovery that has been recognized nationally and internationally. She previously held Clinician-Scientist awards with the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation, and is an associate editor with Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.
