Actionable guidance for CSEP practitioners to help clients exercise safely in polluted air conditions
As climate change intensifies, extreme wildfire seasons are becoming more frequent, resulting in heightened levels of air pollution. As pollution levels rise, participation in physical activity tends to decline. Understanding how to navigate this challenge is essential for practitioners who aim to help clients maintain healthy, active lifestyles in increasingly polluted environments.
In this evidence-based session, Dr. Luisa Giles, an expert in the health effects of exercising in polluted air, will guide CSEP practitioners through the latest research on air pollution and physical activity. Dr. Giles will explore how to balance the risks of pollution exposure with the benefits of exercise, focusing on advising clients during poor air quality, such as wildfire events.
Participants will learn about different types of air pollutants, their physiological and health effects, and the unique risks associated with exposure during exercise. The session will also provide actionable strategies to help minimize these risks, including interpreting and applying the Canadian Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).
Learning Objectives:
Describe common air pollutants, their sources, and the physiological impacts of air pollution exposure at rest and during exercise.
Interpret the Canadian Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to inform decision-making and provide actionable guidance.
Recommend strategies clients can implement to reduce the health risks of exercising in poor air quality conditions.
By the end of this session, practitioners will be better equipped to support and counsel individuals on how to remain active safely, even when the air quality is compromised. Reserve your spot today and gain the tools to guide clients through safe exercise practices confidently
