Program Overview Join your peers in Calgary on March 14 for a full-day professional development experience designed to strengthen your evidence-based skills as an exercise professional. Can’t make it to Calgary? Attend virtually and enjoy the same high-quality learning experience from wherever you are.
CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist(R) (CSEP-CEP) members, CSEP Certified Personal Trainer(R) (CSEP-CPT) members, and fitness professionals are increasingly asked to operate across high-performance, clinical, and organizational environments. Whether supporting athletes returning from injury, working with diverse client populations, applying advanced testing in real-world settings, or leading teams and programs, practitioners must translate evidence into action while navigating evolving professional demands.
This CSEP Professional Development Day is designed to strengthen applied decision-making, professional judgment, and leadership capacity across the full scope of exercise physiology practice. The program brings together experts from high-performance sport, clinical exercise physiology, applied testing environments, and fitness leadership to explore how evidence-based principles are implemented where they matter most.
Learning Focus Participants will explore how exercise science is applied across diverse populations and professional settings, with a focus on:
Translating data and research into practical programming and return-to-performance decisions;
Designing and delivering exercise interventions for clinical and post-transplant populations;
Applying advanced testing and training strategies in real-world environments; and
Developing leadership skills to support teams, staff, and professional growth within the fitness and exercise industry.
Session Highlights These presentations bring together applied perspectives from performance sport, clinical exercise physiology, and fitness leadership.
Beyond the Lab: Real-World Testing, Training, and Emerging Performance Trends Cory Fagan: TCR Sport Lab Applied Exercise Physiology
Cory Fagan will explore how exercise physiology principles are applied in real-world training and testing environments. His session will examine emerging trends shaping the field, including VO₂ max assessment, altitude training, and athlete tourism, and how these tools are used outside traditional laboratory settings. Attendees will gain insight into translating evidence-based testing and training strategies into practical applications that support performance, innovation, and athlete development in applied sport environments.
Data-Informed Rehabilitation and Return-to-Play in Elite Sport Dr. Matthew Jordan: University of Calgary, Integrative Neuromuscular Sport Performance Lab
Dr. Matthew Jordan will present advanced approaches to rehabilitation and return-to-play for elite athletes, grounded in neuromuscular performance, biomechanics, and strength and conditioning. Drawing on his experience supporting high-performance athletes, including NHL players, he will discuss how data-informed monitoring and integrated performance models are used to manage complex injuries. This session will highlight practical strategies to optimize recovery and support a safe, effective return to high-performance sport.
Leading High-Performing Fitness Teams: Building Culture, Staff, and Professional Practice Jessica Power Cyr: Fitness Leadership & Team Development
Jessica Power Cyr will focus on leadership and professional practice within fitness and exercise environments. Her session will explore strategies for leading and supporting high-performing teams, developing staff, and building strong professional cultures. Attendees will gain insight into how effective leadership, mentorship, and organizational practices contribute to sustainable career growth and high-quality service delivery in fitness and performance settings.
Clinical Exercise Physiology in Medically Complex Populations: Programming for Chronic Disease and Transplant Care Kathryn Wytsma-Fisher: University of Calgary, Transplant Wellness Program
Kathryn Wytsma-Fisher will examine the application of clinical exercise physiology in individuals living with chronic disease and post-transplant conditions. Drawing from the Transplant Wellness Program, she will highlight how individualized exercise interventions are designed for medically complex populations. This session will emphasize functional capacity development, wellness, and long-term health outcomes through tailored, evidence-informed exercise programming.
